Thermospheric global average density trends, 1967–2007, derived from orbits of 5000 near-Earth objects

چکیده
[1] We use orbit data on 5000 near-Earth space objects to investigate long-term trends in thermospheric total mass density, which has been predicted to decrease with time due to increasing CO2 concentrations. We refine and extend to 2007 previous density trend estimates, and investigate solar cycle-dependent bias in empirical density models previously used to filter out solar irradiance effects. We find that the bias is caused in part by the solar cycle dependence of the long-term trends, and we develop a new representation of solar cycle, seasonal, and geomagnetic activity effects. At 400 km, we estimate an overall trend of –2.68 ± 0.49 % per decade and trends of –5 and –2 % per decade at solar minimum and maximum, respectively, in fair quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions. The global average density trends also depend on the phase of the year, with the strongest trends around October and weak trends in January. Citation: Emmert, J. T., J. M. Picone, and R. R. Micro-satellite Mission Analysis: Theory Overview and Some Examples
Rudimentary mission analysis for micro-satellites has been carried out, in particular for ionospheric/thermospheric " dipper " missions. The basic equations of orbital mechanics are summarized and commented on. General properties of near-Earth orbits are discussed and exemplified in figures and tables. In addition, a few specific mission scenarios are described and discussed.
متن کاملLong-term dynamics of bright bolides
We have integrated backward and forward in time the orbits of 20 very bright bolides (with visual magnitude brighter than −10) over a time span of 5 Myr or more. The sample was mainly selected among events observed during the period between 1993 and 1996, but we have included also three older, particularly interesting events (Abee, 1952; Glanerbrug, 1990; and EN220991, 1991). For a large part o...
متن کاملThe structure of the upper atmosphere of mars: In situ accelerometer measurements from mars global surveyor
The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) z-axis accelerometer has obtained over 200 vertical structures of thermospheric density, temperature, and pressure, ranging from 110 to 170 kilometers, compared to only three previous such vertical structures. In November 1997, a regional dust storm in the Southern Hemisphere triggered an unexpectedly large thermospheric response at mid-northern latitudes, increas...
متن کاملUNCLASSIFIED PREPARING FOR PLANETARY DEFENSE: Detection and Interception of Asteroids on Collision Course with Earth Subject and Problem Statement
As the Earth revolves around the Sun, it orbits through planetary debris left from the formation of the solar system. Many of the debris objects are asteroids and comets in orbits bringing them close to the Earth and are referred to as Near-Earth-Objects (or NEOs). Of the total NEO population, some portion are in orbits actually intersecting or crossing the orbit of the Earth. The asteroids of ...
متن کاملMigration of small bodies and dust to the terrestrial planets
We integrated the orbital evolution of 30,000 Jupiter-family comets, 1300 resonant asteroids, and 7000 asteroidal, trans-Neptunian, and cometary dust particles. For initial orbital elements of bodies close to those of Comets 2P, 10P, 44P, and 113P, a few objects got Earthcrossing orbits with semi-major axes a<2 AU and moved in such orbits for more than 1 Myr (up to tens or even hundreds of Myrs...
